Fire safety

Preventing fires is a responsibility shared by all tenants and building owners, and below you can find our guidelines for minimizing fire hazards.

Below you can learn about how to act in case of a fire, and how to prevent fires and minimise risks, should a fire occur.

In case of fire

If you are experiencing an emergency right now, call the emergency services at phone number 112!

  • Save people who are in immediate danger – help each other!
  • Remember your own safety; do not expose yourself to unnecessary risks.

  • Alert those around you that a fire has started or that the fire alarm has gone off.
  • Urge the people around to start evacuating. Remember that people listening to music on their headphones may not have heard the alarm.
  • If the alarm does not automatically start, or if there is another cause for evacuation, press the alarm buttons placed throughout the building.

  • Call 112 (emergency services) and answer the operator’s questions. Calling 112 helps emergency services respond quickly
  • Do you know what address you are calling from? The address of the building is stated on the evacuation plan.

  • All fires start small – acting quickly makes a big difference.
  • Extinguish the fire if you think you can but remember your own safety – do not expose yourself to unnecessary risks!

  • Evacuate the building via the nearest smoke-free evacuation route and head for the assembly point.
  • Close any doors behind you to minimize the spread of fire and smoke.
  • Lifts must never be used for evacuation!
  • Does anyone need help evacuating? Most building stairwells are protected areas (so-called fire cells). People needing assistance can await help from the emergency services there.

Learn the evacuation procedures that apply in the building where you are located, by reading all available signage or maps.

  • Go to the assembly point!
  • Tell emergency services or security staff if people remain inside or if you know where the fire started.
  • When an alarm goes silent, it does not necessarily mean that the danger is over. The emergency services may silence the alarm to facilitate their work in the building. Therefore:
  • Never return to the building before receiving permission from the emergency services, the University security officer or the person in charge of the building.

What you can do to prevent fires

Tenant negligence causes approximately one to two fires every year at LU Accommodation's buildings. Below you will find simple measures to avoid causing a fire hazard, and to avoid being investigated by the police for gross negligence and public danger.

  • Blow out candles before leaving the room they are in.
  • Place burning candles far from flammable materials.
  • Do not put candles on TVs or bookshelves.
  • Do not put too many candles close together, or hot candles on a wooden surface.

Candles that fall or are too close to curtains are common reasons for fires.

  • Never leave the stove unattended when cooking.
  • Always have a lid nearby to smother any fire if pots or frying pans start to burn.
  • Do not store, leave or place anything on the stove.
  • Clean the kitchen fan filter regularly.
  • Use a timer for sensitive appliances, such as toasters, coffee machines and water boilers.

Stove and toaster fires are the most common causes of fire in homes.

  • Avoid using electrical heaters
  • Avoid getting water on appliances, if wet, unplug and let dry before turning on.
  • Don't charge your mobile phone, tablet, or laptop during the night.
  • Only use original chargers and CE-marked products.
  • Charge your devices on a hard surface – not on the bed.
  • Is the cord worn or slightly broken? Discard it!

  • Do not smoke indoors!
  • If smoking outdoors, avoid putting cigarette butts in flowerpots, balcony boxes, plastic, or vessels of other combustible material as it can catch fire.
  • Barbecuing on balconies, galleries, or close to buildings is prohibited.
  • Use prepared barbecue places outside instead.

How to prevent risks in case of fire

LU Accommodation checks evacuation routes and fire safety equipment regularly, but it is also very important that tenants report all incidents they see. Once a fire starts, it may be too late.

A major risk during a fire is when people are unable to leave the building. It is therefore enormously important not to place items in public pathways, stairwells, or in front of doors.

LU Accommodation will remove objects that impact fire safety.

  • Keep corridors, galleries, stairwells, and other common areas free of objects.
  • Never block evacuation routes or fire doors.
  • Immediately report any problems with fire doors, blocked evacuation routes, illumination lights, or other things that you think may affect fire safety.

Make sure that all doors in hallways and stairwells are closed and locked. Fire doors are not allowed to be left open.

Fire doors help contain fires and prevent them from spreading. Keep kitchen doors closed, to prevent false alarms from fire alarms in the corridor. File a fault report as soon as possible if any door is out of order.

We advise you to not have any parties or large gatherings in your accommodation. The total number of people in a corridor must remain low, so corridors can be evacuated quickly during a fire.

If LU Security considers a gathering dangerous, they will close the event.

Do not damage, alter or remove any fire safety warnings, signs, maps or equipment.

In the corridor accommodations we have escape route plans. Please read the instructions. File a fault report if you notice that a sign is stolen or has been altered.

File a fault report if you notice that a fire extinguisher, or other equipment is damaged.

False alarms and vandalism

Too many incidents occur where fire alarms have been activated due to negligence in the kitchen, fortunately without a real fire. False alarms disturb others, and may take up to 30 min to resolve.

If false alarms happen too often, tenants start to ignore fire alarms and fail to take action to save themselves or others! False alarms also unduly strain emergency services when people call 112 even if there is no confirmed fire or smoke.

Fire-alarms at different areas

Familiarize yourself with how the fire alarms work at your housing area, and whether or not you need to test it or change its battery.

DO NOT remove any smoke detector under any circumstance. Such action will result in costly repairs.

These fire alarms are connected to LU Security. Please note! It can take up to 30 minutes for the LU Security to arrive, so please call 112 if there is a fire.

Eddan is equipped with a fire alarm in all kitchens, rooms and apartments.

Klostergården Student House is equipped with a fire alarm in all apartments.

Spoletorp North is equipped with a fire alarm in all common areas. The rooms are equipped with smoke detectors.

Fire alarms in these housing areas are connected directly to the fire department. Please note that false alarms will be charged to the tenant who causes them.

Ideon Student House is equipped with a fire alarm in all kitchens, rooms and corridors.

Sparta is equipped with a fire alarm in all kitchens, rooms and corridors.

Måsvägen has smoke detectors in every corridor room, studio flat and 2-3 bedroom apartments. The fire alarms are not connected to the fire department or LU Security.

Always call 112 if there is a fire.

LU Accommodation's fire prevention routines

According to the Swedish law LU Accommodation, as your landlord, needs to carry out “Systematiskt BrandSkyddsarbete” SBA (Systematic Fire Protection Work).

LU Accommodation's caretakers perform monthly inspections following a fire safety checklist.

The checklist includes making sure that all doors and fire extinguishers are functional, escape routes are clear, etc.

Fire alarms are tested monthly and quarterly. During these tests, the alarm will sound and staff may need access to your accommodation. When LU Accommodation performs fire drills, a housing officer will always be present.

Verify the housing officer's ID to confirm that the drill is organised by LU Accommodation. If the people performing the drill refuse to show their ID Cards or LU Staff Card you are under no obligation to follow their instructions.

The fire department may conduct inspections to ensure that the fire safety is up to code.
